Programme Overview

This course is aimed at those who have a basic knowledge of autism, but would like to increase their understanding and have the opportunity to ask questions.

It is offered as a two day programme and will look more in depth at the Triad of Impairments, sensory processing issues and theories relevant to autism, such as Theory of Mind, Weak Central Coherence and Executive Functioning.

It will discuss some of the more common behaviours that are displayed by people on the spectrum, but will focus on ‘behaviour support’, rather than ‘behaviour management’, which involves seeing behaviour as an attempt to communicate.

It will look at strategies that can be adopted that are generally effective when working with people with autism, though it will emphasise the need to treat every person as an individual.

It will look briefly at some interventions that are often used including TEACCH, PECS, Intensive Interaction and Social stories.

The course will make use of presentation, group exercises, discussion and videos. On the second day it will involve a presentation from a person on the autism spectrum, who will be able to answer questions about how autism has affected them as an individual.

The course is designed to be flexible so that the needs of the participants can be accommodated.
