Overview of Course
Aim
To increase your awareness of abuse and the inter – agency response
Objectives
- be able to define abuse (cultural & historic context)
- to have an understanding of threshold levels of abuse and harm
- to be able to recognise physical signs of abuse/neglect/failure to thrive
- to be able to recognise the signs of emotional and sexual abuse
- to have an awareness of the (increasing) link between domestic abuse and child abuse
- to be aware of the increasing use of IT in child abuse and the associated ‘grooming’ process
- Be aware of the importance of listening to the voice of the child
- make a child protection and / or child in need referral using appropriate school based systems
- to have an understanding of the referral process and it’s requirements – highlighting/ including professional strategy meetings
Course Tutor – Mr Dick Ingram
Dick Ingram began work as a teacher in Birmingham in 1965, and then taught in a variety of secondary schools across South Wales, becoming an expert in dealing with challenging pupil behaviour and eventually specialising in the schooling of children with special educational needs. He also worked extensively in LEA youth services, running youth clubs and activities for both mainstream and SEN teenagers.
He was head of the Specialist provision unit at Pontllanfraith Comprehensive School from 1980 to 1998, followed by a period acting as deputy head teacher of the school.
In January 2000 Dick was seconded to Caerphilly CBC Department of Social Services to help improve inter-agency co-operation in the realm of child protection. In this role he has been closely involved in the development and implementation of co-ordinated child protection procedures, and has devised and delivered targeted training to hundreds of public sector professionals.
Dick now works part time for the LEA and provides some private training / consultancy work under the umbrella of ‘Abeona Training’
